Brushing your teeth is foundational to good oral care and the prevention of diseases. The American Dental Association states that both manual and electric toothbrushes effectively remove plaque and reduce decay and disease. Any toothbrush with the ADA Seal of Acceptance is proven safe and effective, and manual and electric toothbrushes have their own unique benefits. Many patients want to switch from manual to electric, so we’ve compiled a list of the benefits of using an electric toothbrush.

#1 Effective at Removing Plaque

Electric toothbrushes have a vibration or oscillation (rotating) feature that helps remove plaque buildup from the teeth and gums. The vibration or oscillation allows for more movements each time you move the toothbrush across your teeth. Studies have shown that using an electric toothbrush reduces more plaque and gingivitis than a manual brush, and oscillation brushes work even better than vibrating ones.

#2 Easier for People with Limited Mobility

One of the things people love about electric toothbrushes is that they do most of the work for you. An electric toothbrush may be easier to use and maneuver around the mouth for people with limited mobility or issues like carpal tunnel, arthritis, and developmental disabilities.

#3 Built-In Timers

Many electric toothbrushes have built-in timers. These timers alert you when you’ve brushed for the allotted two minutes so you can brush long enough to remove plaque from your smile.

#4 Reusable and Cuts Down on Waste

Electric toothbrushes are considered less wasteful than single-use manual toothbrushes. Many electric toothbrushes are reusable, and you can change the brush heads when it’s time to replace them. However, there are also single-use electric toothbrushes, which you’ll have to replace when it’s time for a new toothbrush.

#5 Safe for Gums

When used correctly, an electric toothbrush is gentle on your enamel and gums, promoting overall oral health. Be careful not to brush too hard or vigorously as this can lead to gum recession, irritation, and enamel wear.

#6 Fun for Kids

It’s pretty normal for kids to get bored with brushing their teeth. But an electric toothbrush is more engaging and can help your little ones accomplish excellent oral hygiene. There are countless electric toothbrushes just for kids that even play music or have their favorite superhero or cartoon character.
