Child's First Visit

Screen-Shot-2017-09-11-at-10.36.25-AMIt’s never too early to start your child on the road to a lifetime of happy, healthy smiles. At Antelope Creek Family Dentistry, our caring kids dentists and their skilled team of dental professionals are always excited to welcome new patients to their first visit to our Lincoln office.

When To Come

Our doctors recommend scheduling your children for their first kids dentistry appointment when they are between the ages of 18 - 24 months. Even though there may only be a few baby teeth visible at that age, there are plenty of things our kids dentists can begin doing to set your children on the path to great oral health.

Some of the main reasons to begin dental care this early include:

  • Reviewing the proper ways to care for a young child's mouth
  • Going over your child's developmental milestones
  • Discussing the importance of good oral hygiene

If your child has developed tooth decay early, your kids dentist can take care of that too. However, typically a first visit is all about ensuring the development of healthy habits that will make future visits to our Lincoln kids dentistry more enjoyable.

Preparing for the Big Day

First and foremost, as a parent, we advise that you exhibit a positive attitude about going to the dentist. Children pick up these kinds of emotional triggers easily, and helping them develop a good outlook on the dentist that will last a lifetime is strongly dependent on you.

The first visit simply involves talking to you and your child, looking in his or her mouth, and making oral health assessments. As such, we recommend being honest with your child about what to expect so he or she has no reason to be afraid.

On the day of the first visit to our Lincoln office, it is a good idea to bring a comforting toy, a snack, and an extra diaper or two in case of fussiness. If possible, leave other children at home, so we can concentrate on the new patient. Additionally, we suggest filling out our new patient forms in advance so that you save time and effort on the day of the visit.

The Appointment

When you and your child are comfortably seated in the office, we'll spend a few minutes getting to know each other and explaining what we will be doing. Our staff will help your child get acclimated to our Lincoln office by:

  • Counting their teeth
  • Teaching them about the dental instruments we use during treatment
  • Riding them up and down in our treatment chair
  • Giving them a new toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss to use at home
  • Letting them pick a prize from our treasure chest

Then we'll perform a gentle examination of your child’s mouth. Your dentist will be looking for any early signs of dental problems such as tooth decay, and assessing the risk that your child may develop decay in the future. Often this kind of risk assessment can help us prevent (and even reverse) the early stages of tooth decay without any drilling.

Once the check-up is complete, we will discuss the various ways to keep your child’s oral health in top condition and prevent tooth decay, the most common chronic disease of childhood. Some areas we’ll cover include:

  • Maintaining a healthy, well-balanced diet
  • Utilizing fluoride treatments and dental sealants
  • Developing good oral hygiene habits
  • Practicing optimal teeth brushing & flossing
