Frequently Asked Questions at Antelope Creek Family Dentistry

Serving Lincoln, Lancaster County and Nebraska

Q. How often should I see a dentist?

A. The American Dental Association (ADA) guidelines recommend visiting a dentist at least twice a year for a check-up and professional cleaning. Our office also recommends a minimum of two visits per year.

Q. What if I have an emergency?

A. Please call our office as soon as you determine that you have a dental emergency. We will be glad to work you in to our schedule if you have a dental emergency during regular business hours. After hours, over the weekend and during holidays, please call our office for the emergency contact number.

Q. Is cosmetic dentistry expensive?

A. We strive to provide our patients with the highest standard of cosmetic dental care available and offer a variety of payment options to help make your treatment more affordable. Please see our Financial/Insurance page for more detailed information about our payment options.

Q. Does insurance cover cosmetic dental procedures?

A. Generally, dental insurance does not covered cosmetic dental procedures. However, there are some procedures used for cosmetic purposes that may be covered by your insurance plan, so be sure to review your insurance plan to understand what is and is not covered. Our financial team will be glad to file insurance claims for you to ensure you receive the maximum benefit available.

Q. Is there financing available?

A. Yes, we have a variety of financing options available, including no- and low-interest financing options. Please visit our Financial/Insurance page for more information.

Q. Am I a good candidate for cosmetic dentistry?

A. If you are unsatisfied with your current smile because your teeth are discolored, crooked, chipped or missing, then you may be a good candidate for cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry is ideal of patients looking for a beautiful smile with immediate results.

Q. How do I get rid of my old, black amalgam fillings?

A. Drs. Svoboda, Treat and Hedlund are able to replace old, broken-down, dark amalgam/mercury fillings with tooth-colored, natural-looking white composite filings.

Q. To correct my crooked or gapped teeth, do I have to get braces?

A. Braces depend on the severity of your orthodontic problems. If your teeth are slightly crooked or have little gaps, these problems can be eliminated with Clear Correct removable braces, porcelain veneers or dental bonding. If you have serious orthodontic problems, we can refer you to an orthodontist and see what options are available to you.

Q. Can the dentist whiten my teeth?

A. There are several methods available for bleaching the teeth: in office, overnight or daily. Opalescence bleaching is done in our office. One session generally lasts one and a half to two hours, and you can read or relax during the treatment. For overnight bleaching, we make an impression of your teeth and create a mouthguard that fits your bite. Each day you fill the mouthguard with a small amount of bleaching gel and wear it overnight or for a few hours during the day. The overnight bleaching process takes approximately two weeks.

Other over-the-counter daily bleaching products are available, but it is important to use any bleaching product only under the supervision of a dentist. To achieve the whitening results you desire, the ADA recommends that you seek the professional advice of a dentist, including examination and diagnosis of the cause of tooth discoloration, before you begin any bleaching program.

Q. I have crowns, and now I have dark lines near my gums. How can this be corrected?

A. Years ago, crowns were made of metal and had porcelain fused onto the surface. The part of the crown that met the original tooth was still metal, causing this dark line near the gumline. We now place full porcelain crowns so you’ll never have a dark line! To read more, please see our Porcelain Crowns and Bridges page.

Q. I have worn down teeth. Can I have a beautiful, healthy smile recreated?

A. Usually the answer is, “Yes!” Drs. Svoboda, Treat and Hedlund can offer you a Smile Makeover, as seen on the popular TV show Extreme Makeovers. Using crowns, bridges, veneers and sometimes a full mouth restoration, they can give you the perfect, white smile you’ve been dreaming of! For more information, please see our Smile Makeovers page.

Q. How long will my new and improved smile last?

A. The materials we use to restore smiles are actually stronger than the natural tooth and prove to be more resistant to normal wear and tear, such as staining. Maintaining proper oral hygiene habits and regularly visiting your dentist will help your new and improved smile last for years to come.

Q. What should I expect at my first appointment?

A. One of our staff members will compile your medical and dental history during your first visit. We will perform a comprehensive oral exam, including an examination of your teeth and gums, an oral cancer screening and X-rays of your teeth. Then together, you and the dentist will work together to develop a customized treatment plan to meet your specific needs and desires. We utilize the most state-of-the-art technology available to ensure you receive optimum results!
